Scientists hunting for gravitational waves in the far universe from millions of years ago now say that they may have heard “whispers” of a black hole eating up a neutron star, some 1.2 billion light-years away from Earth. They are sitting on data that has the potential of giving astronomy—the oldest of the natural sciences—a detection that has never been seen before.
